kalie c. harrington, lcsw, cctp, ryt
owner, psychotherapist + clinical director
as a professional…
kalie is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), a registered yoga teacher (RYT) and a certified clinical trauma professional (CCTP). she graduated from the University of New England in 2021 with her Master of Social Work concentrating in clinical social work + trauma-informed care. kalie has worked in the fields of mental health, education and social justice for over a decade on both the east and west coasts.
there likely is not a population kalie hasn’t worked with. her clinical philosophy is simple; we don’t know what we don’t know. kalie immersed herself in the practice of listening to and learning from others beginning in undergrad in Vermont. she worked with unhoused pregnant and parenting youth, assisted in opening of new habitat for humanity affiliates and lobbied on Capitol Hill for programs related to national service year funding and youth mentoring.
after undergrad kalie worked with at-promise, underserved youth in the inner-city San Francisco Bay Area as an Americorps volunteer with City Year. while supporting high school english classes, kalie and her team attempted to combat the drop-out rates of underfunded high schools in gang impacted communities. she spent a year building relationships with teenagers and sitting in the necessary discomfort of cultural humility and her white privilege. she regards this as one of the most significantly joyful and educational experiences of her life.
upon returning to the east coast, kalie dabbled in medical social work and continued child and family work, however quickly learned the impacts of exhaustion and burnout. after a healing sabbatical kalie returned to graduate school to complete her masters with a new perspective and dream; be a human first, and a social worker second. it was here where she learned her passion for trauma research, modalities to treat trauma and stressor related disorders, and creating trauma-informed systems and organizations.
since graduating with her masters, kalie has worked with various survivor populations; substance use clinics, maximum security prisons, and most recently, outpatient therapy in a private practice setting for survivors who identify as womxn, trans + nonbinary.
kalie believes that rapport building is her greatest strength with her clients. while she is trained in and pulls from many different modalities such as MI, ACT, CBT/TF-CBT and compassion based practices and mindfulness, she focuses heavily on the relationship she has with each of her clients; it has been empirically validated that the client-therapist relationship is a higher indicator of client success and post-traumatic growth than which modality used in session. she has also received training in TC-TSY (Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga) - an evidence-based clinical treatment for complex trauma and PTSD. with her clients permission, she integrates breath work, mindfulness practices and gentle movement into sessions as a trauma-informed yoga instructor.
as a trauma therapist, trauma-informed agency trainer, trauma-informed supervisor and trauma-informed yoga teacher + trainer, kalie makes an active effort to seek out trainings, researchers and resources that revolutionize and embody trauma-informed care principles and treatment modalities.
as a human…
kalie is a wife, a daughter, a sister, a dog-mom, a survivor, a first generation college graduate, a first generation graduate school graduate, an aries, a guitar player, a friend, a writer, a music lover, and a dorito connoisseur.
kalie founded Beauty In Her Struggle after a challenging period in her own life where grief, pregnancy loss and medical trauma compounded in a storm that blew away her ability to feel or believe in spirituality. while opening up her heart to the pain instead of closing it off, she learned of the pure beauty that pain can bring; connection, empowerment, validation and most importantly: freedom. kalie hopes to help other women find the beauty in their struggles.
more importantly- her favorite dorito flavor is spicy sweet chili. she tends to drop an f-bomb (or 6) in session. her overuse of exclamation points is certainly her emotional security blanket. she has two rescue pups who she regrets to inform you have matching holiday collars. she is happily married to her husband and they live an adventurous life with regular travel, lots of road trips, and attendance of way too many concerts. the choice to be alcohol free came to kalie a few years ago; she’s been happily embracing mocktails, clarity and lots of oat milk latte’s since. though to note; kalie passes no judgement on folks who partake in alcohol consumption and consistently reaffirms her clients abilities to make choices that feel best for them. she is an avid supporter of harm reduction models. there are few things that make kalie feel more alive than live music (especially 90’s hip hop + reggae), watching her dogs run off leash at the beach and coffee. way too much coffee.
kalie embraces her identity as a survivor of trauma and, like many therapists, attributes much of her success with clients to this shared and felt experience. most importantly, kalie believes in you and your ability to find the beauty in your struggle, the same way she’s found the beauty in her own.
